Discussion Solution — Mollusks and Litter Decomposition

چکیده
This experiment produced six independent sets of observations, so the appropriate analysis was by ANOVA or equivalent. The assumptions of equal variances and Normality both are somewhat shaky but I think are acceptable, given the advantages of ANOVA for the follow-up analyses needed to answer the questions. The first question could be answered by either of two methods, depending on exactly how you chose to interpret the question. First, a pre-planned contrast of the control to the average of the mollusk treatments would answer the question in terms of the average mollusk. This contrast indicates that decomposition was greater on average in the mollusk treatments than the control (P = 0.0038). Alternatively, Dunnett’s multiple comparisons could be used to compare each mollusk treatment to the control; these show (at overall α=0.05) that only the L. maximus and O. alliarius treatments were significantly different from the control. The second set of questions could be answered by unplanned multiple comparisons following the ANOVA, or by ANOVA or equivalent with the control treatment excluded; any of these produces the conclusion that there are no statistically significant differences among the species’ effects. The conclusions, thus, are that yes, presence of mollusks increased litter decomposition, but the effects of the species were not significantly different from each other.

Over-grazing may induce changes in the dynamics of plant residue carbon and soil organic carbon (SOC). The objective of this study was to evaluate the litter quality of three dominant pasture species, and the relationship between litter quality and C dynamics under different range managements in native rangelands of SabzKou. متن کاملThe leaching of Eucalyptus hybrids and Acacia auriculiformis leaf litter: laboratory experiments on early decomposition and ecological implications in congolese tree plantations
The ®rst stage of leaf litter decomposition of two eucalyptus hybrids and Acacia auriculiformis was studied in laboratory experiments where the decaying leaves were leached with water. Although the litter of both the species were characterized by a high content of soluble compounds, little soluble organic matter of acacia litter was recovered in litter leachates. By contrast, soluble organic ma...

The decomposition of leaf litter has important in the ecosystem level through regulating buildup of soil organic matter, regulating of nutrient for plant growth and influencing the flux of Co2 from the soil. Several studies have introduced Home-field advantage (HFA) as an index for indicating more rapidly decomposition process of litter in its own site. In the present study, beech and alder s...
متن کاملThe Role of Litter in Nutrient Cycling in a Brackish
The role of litter in nutrient cycling in a Typha angustifolia dominated brackish tidal marsh was studied with a field experiment. In replicated plots, litter was either removed, replaced with plastic strips (pseudolitter), increased threefold, or left unaltered. One set of plots received fortnightly surface applications of ammonium phosphate solution at an annual rate of 65 g/m2 of N and 72 g/...
